Week 2 Lectures 1 and 2: Networking Basics

September 16, 2011

In week 2’s lectures we focused on networking basics necessary for the course. This is not a networking course however we must understand our working environment as best we can. For these lectures we touched on topics including the OSI network model, TCP/IP and network addresses. We also took some time during lecture 2 on Thursday to try our hands a Man-In-the-Middle (MITM) attack called ssltrip that uses arp spoofing and some nifty scripting to get around SSL encryption (to hopefully steal some private information). The attack did not go well for most attackers in class but at least one person was victim to the attack.
